There is a complexity to achieving true simplicity in a restaurant setting. It is an art. At Urchin Restaurant it is a beautifully and precisely choreographed ballet in which sustainable fresh fish and seafood are the prima and danseur. The hallmarks of the Urchin elemental ocean dining experience are underpinned by excellent, unobtrusive service, locally sourced and produced ingredients, and world class wine from a carefully curated wine cellar.

Gerard Van Staden showcases his signature seafood-based cooking at Urchin, fuelled by a life-long obsession with the elemental flavours of the ocean. Inspired by travels up and down the nation’s coast, and drawing on influences from across Africa, Asia and Europe; Gerard and his team cook exciting, occasionally mischievous dishes rooted in classic techniques that pop with flavour.

Menu different to menu on website, no wine list. When asking what wine per glass, only red no white. When the person serving us could she I was definitely not happy she came back a bit later and “found” a white wine that she can offer by glass. I had the Poached Kingklip, bland and very overpriced. We also ordered the chicken and prawn curry, definitely not worth going back to. There were quite a few items on the menu that wasn’t available. There were 2 other people the whole evening. Understand completely why. We definitely won’t be back. This is very disappointing as the reviews were good and the pictures on the website also looks very nice. Not sure if something changes recently but I definitely won’t recommend. The people serving us was very friendly but they can also only work with what they have available.

I was disappointed that an admin mishap resulted in us only arriving an hour after the movie started. What was meant to be a 2 hour experience, was cut down to one hour because an erroneous email was sent out with the incorrect starting time. Although the food and drinks were lovely, it felt very rushed as we had multiple courses served at once to “catch up”.

Every moment is perfectly coordinated from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. Every staff member treats you with thoughtfulness and respect, which makes the dining experience extra special. The creativity shown through the menu is inspiring. Taste the Movie is a perfect festive twist on a dinner/movie date. I highly recommend it!

Online menu did not match what was presented to us on the night.. no sushi no crayfish on main course which was replaced by what should have been langoustines looked more like average prawns asked for medium steak and a well cooked tough piece arrived... needless to say the replacement steak was fatty and as tough.. and then to find out no chocolate torte for dessert.. A very disappointed evening..
