At Urban Playground, we’re all about crafting simple yet flavorful food that tells a story. From the creative minds behind Sense of Taste Chef School, Debs and Chef Peter Ayub, along with their son, Sous Chef Byron Thebus, and our talented team of chefs, we are a small but dynamic group redefining Gourmet Street Food.

To us, food is more than just a meal—it’s about sharing, creating memories, and bringing people together with flavors that leave a lasting impression.

Our Menu
Urban Playground offers sustainable, ethical, seasonal, and no-waste (nose-to-tail) dishes, crafted with love and care. We proudly support local producers and businesses, bringing their ingredients to life in our innovative, edgy open kitchen. It’s a loud, fun chef’s playground where every dish is designed to blow your taste buds away.

Community First
Through our Sense of Taste Chef School Feeding Program, we help fight hunger in our local community, feeding over 1000 people weekly. Every meal we serve helps support and uplift those in need. Fighting hunger one meal at a time.

    This is a little gem of a restaurant, The staff are brilliant in everyway possible from the ambience they set to the amazing service you get and the food is absolutely delicious and flavourable . You can see these rising chefs are passionate about what they are doing and it comes through in the food. Beautifully plated food with great flavours

    Urban Playground is one of the Cape Town’s best kept secrets. Run adjacent to the Sense of Chef School in Maitland, it delivers 5 star food in a relaxed and fun urban setting! Make a booking to enjoy the best food in Cape Town. It will not disappoint and you can thank me later!!

    A superb experience! As a local tourguide I’m trying to show Europeans locations that are not always found in any guides… Urban Playground is one of my favourites and they never disappoint me nor the visitors, Great Amuse Bouche, followed by a variety of very tasty starters/tapas and well prepared mains such as Lamp Kofta, Kudu Loin, Beef Fillet Esplanade… Another greeting from the kitchen was a delicious desert idea. Well done to the team of Urban Playground. We certainly will be back!

    I cannot flaw anything. From the warm and gracious welcome on entering the wrong side of the restaurant (through the kitchen!), to the lovely touch of refresher towels and the complimentary amuse bouche, tea service with the bill and the very fancy takeaway box, everything was perfect. And those are were just the boujee extras. On to the reason we actually went - the food - did not disappoint at all. Generous portions and packed with flavour, we left very satisfied, albeit disappointed that we left no room for dessert. We've already decided what we want to try next on our next visit. The vibe was relaxed and I loved to hear the busyness from the kitchen. We could hear the passion. Was this a superb experience? Yes, Chef!!!!

    A completely unexpected gem in an unexpected location. Fantastic ambiance, fantastic food and wonderful staff. If you have out-of-town guests who appreciate Cape Town's best-kept secrets, this is the place to go.
