There’s a table almost in the Atlantic Ocean. A panorama of the Hout Bay Sentinel and rooms with stunning views beckon. This Chefs Warehouse has a personality all of its own, with a menu that changes with the tides. Chef Cameron Smith likes to change two dishes a week to please his regular following and keep himself and his team invigorated.
Small plates for sharing are presented in four courses where you will immediately appreciate the harmony. Start with the ever-popular oysters and the oat and honey brioche with home-churned butter. Choose from a good selection of local wines and cocktails, or dive into the tasting menu with the wine pairing. There are equally satisfying options for those desiring vegan and vegetarian menus. Stand-out dishes might be the flame-grilled tuna belly with sour curry, furikake, num num oil (the num nums from Cam’s garden), and a miso feta mousse. The Patagonian squid with amasi atchar mousse, lime escabeche, and smoked yellowtail crème fraîche is another splendid example of the chef’s prowess with feisty flavours.
Cameron’s style of cooking, inspired by South Africa, showcases elements of home cuisine for this local lad who grew up in the Eastern Cape. At the end of your sojourn, you’ll be invited to throw a wishing stone into the ocean. There’s no doubt that many diners simply wish to return.
