Gourmet Guide™ Description

Creation’s new-look Tasting Room has introduced bright pops of colour with glass sculptures, complementing the all-encompassing views of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Local, of course. Sleek wooden tables and sheepskin-covered chair seats in winter add to the welcoming ambience indoors. Here, every season is given equal emphasis with a sensory food-and-wine pairing menu crafted to stage the regional bounty.

The vine leads the way, with six courses conceptualised to make the wine shine. The Ayurvedic ethos ensures that tasters and diners leave with a lightness of being. The focus on wellness ensures that, from the amuse bouche, your blood sugars are kept steady. Ingredients are not overworked; simple ingredients eloquently combined, like tofu, sesame seeds, and ginger, are fried to create a delectable crust. Chef Eleanor Niehaus leads a unified kitchen brigade, many of whom hold wine qualifications and are sent to Europe for constant exposure and
upskilling. Every team member is obviously passionate about the place, produce, and their role.

Attention to detail is sublime. Note the pottery plate pressed with a Pinot Noir vine leaf, the silk scarf presented for you to touch, a feather, and even a shell to hold to your ear – it’s all part of a multi-course odyssey that engages every sense, a testament to co-owner Carolyn Martin’s sixth sense. There is something for everyone, from breakfast and a kid’s menu to charcuterie and cheese platters. It’s unofficially the gastronomic ambassador of the Overberg and Cape Floral Kingdom, simply heaven on a plate.

    We chose the wine and food pairing experience and found it to be overpriced for what was offered. While the quality of the ingredients was good, none of the dishes truly stood out or felt memorable. The execution and overall cohesion of the menu did not meet the level we expected. Portion sizes were extremely small and, despite it being a tasting menu, we left feeling hungry, which was particularly disappointing given the price point. The wines were excellent; however, there was no option to repeat pours, and the tasting portions were very limited. Overall, the experience felt more aligned with European pricing and menu concepts, which contrasts significantly with South African standards and expectations. For the price paid, we expected a more refined, generous, and satisfying experience.

    Service, staff, setting and attention to detail was exemplary. Wines were universally enjoyed. Food was of a v good standard, pacing of the courses was spot on, but not to everybody’s taste. Venue is a good 25/30 mins outside Hermanus so pre booking taxi both ways is essential.

    Absolutely spectacular. It’s peak season so be try busy so give yourself a few hours for a lunch. However the staff did all they could to ensure any inconveniences were managed with finesse, always on the ball with a smile and generous gesture… and that’s what sets Creation apart.

    We were at creation Wines 2021, we did a food and wine pairing. This year we booked to do the food and wine pairing again. What a shock when we saw the pricing. price 2021 - R 895.00p/p, price 2025 R R 1605.00 p/p. 80% increase in 4 years..... Creation will not see us again......We are local people he don't earn euro's or dollars.
