From the start, in May 1996 it has been our goal to delight each guest with a superb dining experience in our warm, relaxing venue set in the heart of the glorious HELDERBERG countryside. We use only fresh, often organic and where possible local ingredients to prepare our dishes.

They are inspired by SOUTH AFRICAN favourites and flavours from around the world. The fresh seasonal and inspirational menu changes almost every day, the main menu four times a year.

Founded by ex-Johannesburg restaurateur Ken Forrester, Devon Valley wine maker Martin Meinert and Chef Kathy Romer- Lee, the opening was preceded by lengthy debates in Kens kitchen about the butternut colour of the interior and the name - Butternut? Wine plays a major role in the partners lives and many of the local winegrowers are regular patrons.

    Never before have a I found a restaurant that charges R95 corkage - this is totally unacceptable. I queried this with the owner and was told that he carries a vast variety of wine - hence the high corkage. I told him that in my opinion this is not true as a vast number of foreigners go to this restaurant, and they can certainly afford this - they can even buy his expensive wines. I think it was his website that mentions that there is no corkage in the winter months - I wonder why. He needs the business as the foreigners are not there to support him, so he thinks he is now doing the locals a favour. I said I would not be returning to his restaurant and sad as it was he couldn't care - never said sorry - but hey I will continue to support restaurants that have no corkage or corkage up to R50
