The Waterside is the latest venture by The La Colombe Group, located on Pierhead at the V&A Waterfront. Headed by Roxy Mudie, serving both a reduced menu and tasting menu. Inside and outside seating is available

Gourmet Guide™ Description

Small and intimate, with striking views, Waterside in the Pierhead Building lives up to its name, with every seat embracing harbour views. It’s a special treat, rather than a special occasion. Summer allows for dining on the deck, where the background bustle adds to the appeal
for local and international diners.

Head chef Roxanne Mudie’s flavour profiles can be coined “East Meets East,” or daring meets well executed. Her inspiration is deeply rooted in her passion for Asian cuisine, which she has cleverly integrated into a single menu that is as creative as it is brave. From the first bite of bread, you’ll be entranced. The menu boasts standout dishes like Asian pork belly with scallops, corn, peanuts, and Szechuan, artfully plated. The crayfish dumpling with pickled kohlrabi and dashi broth is a winner.

The presentation is impeccable, where each dish is a testament to meticulous attention to detail. The impressive wine list showcases mainly South African selections, with a choice of a standard or iconic pairing. Confident staff navigate the tables with ease. The team, led by manager Van Zyl Van der Merwe, is knowledgeable, display a real sense of ownership, and their energy is infectious. Here high expectations are exceeded.

I was expecting more. The service for what I paid was slow. I did mentioned that we got 3 hours as it was a 2-3 hr experiance, but the time between meals dragged on. The waiter also nudged me Physically while I am talking to my guests (You NEVER touch a guest). I found this not professional and especially when I was in a midst of explaining something to guests. Food was great, but with the delays and 2 bottles of wine down, and being offerred more wine instead of food to sustain the duration seemed like strategy to buy expensive bottles (which I did 2, and I dont want to get drunk on week day). So I did not find this value for money and the other groups in the la colombe group are much much better, even upstairs! Sorry, I wont be going back.

Our experience at The Waterside was absolutely top notch from start to finish. Opting for the chef’s tasting menu was the perfect way to experience the kitchen’s creativity and attention to detail. Each course was exquisitely presented and thoughtfully composed. What stood out most was how every dish felt completely unique with no repetition of flavours or techniques. The menu flowed beautifully from one course to the next. Every plate delivered something interesting, whether it was a surprising texture, a bold flavour pairing, or a subtle element that tied everything together. It’s genuinely difficult to choose a favourite, but the bread course was truly exceptional. Often an overlooked part of a tasting menu, this one was elevated to something very memorable. It was beautifully crafted, perfectly textured, and paired with accompaniments that made it feel special and indulgent. The dumplings were another standout. Delicately prepared and packed with flavour and texture. Beyond the food, the overall experience matched the quality of the cuisine. The service was polished and attentive without ever feeling intrusive, and the atmosphere complemented the elegance of the menu. The Waterside delivered a dining experience that felt both refined and welcoming. For anyone looking to enjoy a thoughtfully curated tasting menu in Cape Town, this is a must-visit.

Our lunch at The Waterside was again an absolute delight. The oysters sophisticated and super delicious as the rest of the summer menu. The Prawn Toast very unique and tasty, the lamb tender with a delicate tarragon sauce, the fish of the day was yellowtail and super as well. All in all with a friendly, knowledgable service in a beautiful ambiance and at a fair price worth the visit and the 2 Eat Out stars. We will come back
