A humble group of chefs that know their way around ingredients and flavors.

Gourmet Guide™ Description

The first fully Halaal fine dining restaurant in South Africa was a happy accident. Originally a food production facility, it evolved into a small, intimate restaurant that draws a variety of diners to this unlikely site on busy Voortrekker Road in industrial Salt River.

Service during your four-, six- or eight-course lunch or dinner is attentive and hands-on with a touch of theatre. After an innovative amuse bouche you’ll be captivated by the small seasonal, foraged tart that belies many ingredients like asparagus, edamame beans, sugar snap peas, salted plum, atchar, edible flowers, freshly smoked broccolini and an avocado and pea mousse. Every course is coupled with an aromatic tea–this course is paired with peach jasmine oolong. Chef Anwar Abdullatief has created an unforgettable vetkoek served on a cauliflower custard and mixed herb crumb with a savoury fig and plum chutney. Its companion? Caramel blue spicy tea.

Chef Anwar and his talented team change the menu every two months, with every dish inspired by nature and designed around their space, team, and operation. They focus on humble ingredients, bringing them together to craft works of art with flavours that truly resonate.

Great food and attention and the tea paring was also an eye opener. Will defenatly come back. The lamb wellington was nice but the Cale tartlet with apple also great.

My husband and I always have the best time at Happy Uncles! It is our go-to restaurant for all major occasions. They are always so accommodating and friendly. They even made an off-menu special request item for my husband's birthday! They are the best fine dining restaurant in Cape Town, without a doubt.

Chef Anwar served a very good 9 course dinner for us. There were so many different flavors that we got to enjoy. I especially love the Tuna, the Flavours of the Prophet and the Mille Fieulle Bolla. We had a lovely evening.

While the food was fairly good, the waiting time between courses was very long. After 1 hour 45 mins we had only had 2 of 5 courses (plus an amuse bouche and palate cleanser) and despite asking several times they were unable to speed up the food. The service was friendly but the long wait time just affected everything, we asked to cut short the meal so we weren't delayed too much longer.

Wait too long between courses. No drinks menu. You forced to drink their sparkling grape juice which is silly expensive and not everyone wants, not all the dishes are as tasty as expected. Lots of fried items. When you leave, your clothes are smelling of oil. The portions are smallish. You will still be hungry after the 5 course menu. Also if you dont know Cape Town it's in a far and quiet area
