Both the chicken and lamb tagine were bland very disapointing. Where were the spices? And the chicken overcooked. The chicken dish was left uneaten. We were offered a free sweet but not satisfactory.

Having lunched at Ricks Café Americain on several occasions, the unique taste and quality of their food and interesting Casablanca atmosphere, prompted us to book a room with them for a function to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Sadly, instead of a joyous celebration, it became a frustrating and embarrassing nightmare. Instead of enjoying our time with our guests, we had to devote most of the evening trying to secure wine and food for them ... and apologising for the bad service. Despite two in-person meetings with the day manager, several emails specifying what we wanted on the evening, most of our wishes were ignored. Instead of the excellent personalised service we were promised because they have "twenty years of experience", the service for our party of 28 was mainly left in the hands of one waiter, who was inadequately briefed and couldn't cope. With the result that: • Drinks: We requested in an email and during in-person meetings that guests should be served a specified white and red wine upon arrival and throughout the evening – we were assured during a meeting that there would be sufficient bottles in stock (at least 14 bottles of each). We also discussed that the guests may order any other drinks (apart from the wine) – but that we should be consulted if they ordered an exorbitantly priced imported brand of e.g. whiskey or gin. We were assured that our concern that the person(s) manning the wine station would not be able to handle serving wine, as well as other drinks ordered by non-wine drinking guests, was unfounded. After our second meeting with the manager, we agreed to her suggestion that once everybody was seated, the guests would be served one round of bubbly for a toast. o What happened: There was no wine available for the guests upon arrival – only a station with bubbly. The waiter was unaware of our requests (above) about wine to be served and said that the white wine cannot be brought out because it was still being cooled. He eventually produced four bottles of our specified white and a couple of red bottles – for 28 people! Even before all our guests had arrived and been offered one drink, he announced that the wine was “finished”. We then asked him to serve any similar wine to our guests at the same price. This resulted in a considerable delay during which the night manager (later joined by the day manager in shorts and T-shirt) and the waiter scurried around to find wine for our guests, who were becoming increasingly irritable and thirsty. We recently learnt that one of our non-wine drinking guests, who ordered a whiskey, was told that it was not allowed (without anybody consulting us). • Food: We selected – and paid in advance for – Set Menu C (starters, mains and dessert). We understood that the pre-order and pre-payment was needed for a large party so that the chefs could prep in advance so that the food could be served in good time. o There was only one waiter to serve the food and wine. Due to the waiter running around to find wine (see above) the taking of food orders was delayed. Some of our guests waited more than 3 hours for their starters to arrive. Five guests, who ordered the Caesar’s salad, had to wait more than 30 minutes AFTER the other guests had received their starters for theirs to arrive. By this time the starters of the other guests at their tables were ice cold. Some guests who ordered the Crème Brulée as a dessert choice were served half portions of Panacotta, as there was no more left. All guests had arrived by 7pm, yet their food service was spread over nearly five hours and some only finished their dessert around midnight. Our guests did say that the food was delicious and very tasty - but most of them qualified it with "once it arrived". It is true that the restaurant was packed full on this specific Saturday night, but that is no excuse for running out of pre-ordered wine and food, refusing guests an alternative drinks order after the hosts specified it should be served – and the extremely slow service due to one person having to serve 28 people.
