Pier is the latest venture by The La Colombe Group, located on the Pierhead at the V&A Waterfront. Headed by John Norris Rogers serving a multi course tasting menu inspired by the sea.

Gourmet Guide™ Description

Entering the intimate restaurant that embraces the working harbour, you’re rendered breathless. It’s a heart-stopping, world-class view, and soon you’ll be appreciating cuisine of equal calibre.

PIER has elevated the culinary offering of the V&A Waterfront since opening two years ago. The chef’s menu begins with an ensemble of canapés, innovatively presented in eye-catching white pottery that depicts the ocean floor. Every aspect of this dining discovery has been carefully curated and shaped by chef John Norris-Rogers’ South African heritage and international travels. The snoek-filled takoyaki, cooked tableside and served with a Cape Malay curry relish, shows Japanese influence. The sourdough with curried hake butter is a substantial wave, featuring seafood that’s been gently cured, smoked, and coated in a piquant sauce, finished at your table with aplomb. Alongside, there’s smoked mussel, chorizo, toasted yeast, and cultured butter.

The tandoori yellowfin tuna with avocado and chevra is savoury and smokey. A spice blend coats the tuna before searing. The tuna tartare is paired with a curry XO and yoghurt labneh, harmonising the spices with creaminess. Here is a dish that flawlessly demonstrates John’s ability to balance a hero ingredient with myriad accompaniments, ensuring the tuna holds its own without being overpowered. A coriander spuma and avocado crumbed with spices provide texture. The crunchy chevra mix comprises fried onion, garlic, and curry leaves, served separately so that you may add as little or as much as you like. The diner’s every whim has been considered. Wine pairings, like the service, are impeccable – intuitive and fuelled by passion and knowledge.

This was an exquisite experience, well beyond a wonderful dinner in a beautiful location. The staff was attentive and enthusiastic. Each course was a tour-de-force, with unique presentations and superb ingredients. The wine pairings were wonderful and well presented. I was blown away.

Chefs menu- a wide range of wonderful foods and flavors. Th Springbok was every bit as good the Wagu, minus the Wagu up charge. Food and service exceptional. Views of the harbor- quite lovely!

My wife got food poisoning this morning after eating at Pier. Not a great outcome and meant she lost her prepaid tour of Cape Town (over $350 USD). Server was a tad obtuse about preventing me to try a glass of red Can Sav before ordering it. Nonetheless I ordered it and they forgot about it and it was a full course done before it arrived. Pork was spoiled cold as a result of waiting.

This meal was sensational! The only issue I have with value is I ordered 2 glasses of wine and was not told the price. Each glass was the same price as a bottle. I was shocked at the price and for the price each glass was I should have been told. Other than that, the food and experience were truly out of this world. I don’t know which dish to take over the other. Each uniquely delicious and creative. Especially the palate cleanser.

A table for two with a view of the waterfront on a full moon night with courses served with just the right dose of panache and style. A memorable meal with an exceptional wine list. We left happy!

Michelin star stuff right here in Cape Town. Nuff said. Wonder was a gracious host. Out of the world. Period.

Fabulous! The Winter special lunch at R950 is wonderful value and the recent renovation improvements give the room a better holistic aesthetic! From my perspective it was perfect however, for my veggie wife, I was disappointed that her menu was not as complete and that, unlike the La Colombe sisters, the price was the same as for meat eaters. These points did not distract but, for fairness, they are relevant.

Very good experience, enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu. Exceptional Old Fashioned cocktail with cherry smoke. Service was flawless and some nice touches like the tequila tasting for a cleanser. Very nice table settings and accoutrement. Only crit for me was that we both left hungry, as the portions were so miniscule - and my wife is a very small eater.
