Every dish had something ‘extra’ in terms of either preparation or ingredients - wow!

Mill St Bistro offers a masterclass in simplicity done right. My meal began with perfectly crisp wood-fired flatbread, elevated by the depth of fermented garlic and parsley butter. The roasted beetroot salad followed, a beautifully balanced dish with creamy feta, crunchy candied pecans, and a delightful Cabernet Sauvignon dressing. On recommendation, I ended with the Malva madeleines – light, fragrant, and irresistible when dipped into the luscious miso butterscotch. Chef Phil Carmichael clearly understands how to let great ingredients shine, delivering bold yet refined flavours in every bite. A must-visit in Stellenbosch.

Sadly not the dining experience we were expecting. The ambience is lovely and the service is pretty good. Ryan, the manager was particularly attentive as my husband has some food allergies. The pork belly was fantastic, but the rest of the food was just okay. The flatbread was rubbery and the lamb cutlets disappointing. Undercooked and a very small portion. The flavours on the plate didn’t go together. Overall, I don’t think we’ll be going back - there are too many other fantastic options around the corner.
