The sister restaurant to the award-winning La Colombe Restaurant in Constantia. Contemporary fine dining in Franschhoek, now situated at the beautiful Leeu Estates.

La Colombe (the dove) has consistently received worldwide acclaim and is positioned among the top restaurants in the world.

Visitors to Franschhoek can now look forward to experiencing the same level of service excellence and exquisite cuisine that has put La Colombe on the map – but with a new venture comes a new twist.

Gourmet Guide™ Description

The immaculate gardens and vineyards of the luxurious Leeu Estate in Franschhoek afford a breathtaking backdrop for gastronomic artistry, contributing directly to the plate. A trilogy of snacks is served ‘picnic-style’ in the lounge with a welcome drink. An olive, paying homage to the estate’s produce and head chef Peter Duncan’s travels to Barcelona, pops in your mouth, to kick-start the epicurean adventure. Delicacies with lasting flavours, like oysters with carne asada and grapefruit, and Namibian snow crab, immediately highlight the restaurant’s numerous accolades and awards.

With the chef’s full-experience menu, you’ll be sated from the start. From the langoustine salad to the crayfish peri-peri with ponzu and the yellowfin tuna with dhania and coconut, there is a fairytale coupling of local and international inspirations. Courses like the bread (the sourdough starter proudly presented to the table by the chef), the linefish viskop chowder (an ode to his father) and the dessert of stone fruit, almond, and crème fraîche (this one’s for mom), offer a glimpse into Peter’s heart and heritage.

Each supreme plate is eloquently paired with wines on either the classic or the fancy side, and the non-alcoholic pairings (wines and beer) are imaginative, as are the cocktails.

We’ve eaten at La Petite Colombe several times, visiting La Colombe and La Petite Colombe every year we visit. La Colombe remains excellent, with its reassuringly high and consistent standards across the board. However, La Petite Colombe left us a little deflated this year. As always, the staff were incredible. The menu was interesting, but nonetheless we came away slightly disappointed. Notably the cost had increased significantly, now outstripping La Colombe in Cape Town, but for the increase in costs the menu was a course lighter than previous years. Food was to an excellent standard, but the variety wasn’t quite up to the same standard as previous years either. The lack of the sweet trolley at the end was a shame, as was the missing dessert course. The biggest difference and disappointment versus previous years was the wine flight. Being a course down meant a wine less than previous years, yet there was a significant jump in price for the wine flight. The wines were good, but nowhere near worth the jump in price, especially as measures seemed to be rationed to the point it was barely even a tasting, let alone a glass to go with each course. Barely enough wine to try with the first mouthful of the course. Perhaps there’s a wine drought in Franschhoek this year… All in all, it was a nice experience and we will probably return, mainly in the hope of a return to previous high standards. Getting the wine flight will however not be an essential in the future. There just isn’t the value there, nor the quantity to go with the food. Thai is a real shame as our visit to La Petite Colombe is usually one of the highlights of our trip. Fingers crossed things improve next year.

Great food presentation and creative ideas; constantly changing staff makes it difficult though to develop a rapport with the waiters thereby diminishing the experience.

We’re relative regulars at this restaurant, but recently seems to have dropped the level of service and care it used to have. It’s still amazing food, but the value and fine dining experience is no longer at the level of the past.
