HŌSEKI offers contemporary Japanese cuisine, with dishes crafted to be savoured and shared. Our menu features an extensive list of a la carte dining options – and we typically recommend between six and ten dishes per couple. In addition, we offer a Four-Course Chef’s Selection Menu for Lunch, with a more extensive Eight-Course Omakase menu for dinner. Both menus have an optional wine pairing curated by our sommelier to complement your experience. Across our menu, the majority of our fresh produce is handpicked from the Estate’s vegetable garden and greenhouse, with the remainder provided by producers who share our philosophy of organic farming. We use only sustainably sourced Bluefin tuna, which is renowned for its rich flavour and fatty texture and Yellowfin tuna, which, in contrast, has a mild taste and firm texture. Our Wagyu beef, famed for its intense marbling and tenderness, is locally sourced, and to assist you in your selection, our menu features a marbling score (MS) – a grading system used to evaluate the marbling quality – which ranges from one to twelve. At HŌSEKI, we are proud to work only with local, certified sustainable farms and fisheries to ensure the environment, animals and our communities are respected and preserved for generations to come.

Gourmet Guide Description

Delaire Graff Estate, the jewel of the winelands, is the epitome of luxury. Sweeping views from the top of the Helshoogte Pass encompass vineyards, gardens, and sculptures. The estate boasts a wine lounge, luxury lodges, a villa, a spa and two restaurants. Honour is the essence of Hōseki (meaning ‘a precious gem’). This rebirth of what was previously three-plated Indochine, still headed up by the brilliant chef Virgil Kahn, represents a shift towards lighter cuisine, a global trend Kahn has mastered with aplomb. Sushi chef Shoji Morita and the team have been inspired by the cultural exploration.

The menu offers a choice between à la carte, sushi tasting, or omakase (meaning ‘I leave the details up to you’). There’s sushi (new style and tiradito), soups, bites, salads, tacos, and both hot and cold options–tempura, kushiyaki, and robata. The sushi is next-level: rice is twice polished and there’s a house-made soy crafted from bokkoms, mirin, sake, Kikkoman, and sweet potato. The Cape Wagyu Sando features a 10-plus marble score—the highest in the country—and is served with truffle roe, aioli, ponzu quills, and gold dust on brioche. It’s a journey that is best accompanied by wine or the sake selection. Sommelier Duane Jansen and the well-informed, gracious team will expertly guide you.

Duane was our host and was attentive, helpful with suggestions and very likeable. Ordering multiple options for a sharing family style vibe suited our ignorance of the food and ability to try most of the menu with no expensive commitments. Duane guided us through the options and suggested what he thought would suit our tastes and preferences. The Tempura section of the menu suited novices of this cuisine but the California rolls and soft shell crab were a stand out. Desserts were all excellent with no stand out but lots of debate about their elements and hidden taste profiles. Duane even gave us an off menu option as a surprise. Highly recommend a meal here as even though we unfamiliar with the cuisine it was a highlight for all four diners. Best suited for a celebration or special occasion. Pricing initially scared us but we felt the value for money was the best part of our meal. Will try and go again for sure.

Food was exceptional but way over priced for what you got. Although great experience it doesn't create a feeling of wanting to rush back purely because of price. There are many places in Cape Town that have exceptional food and an incredible experience without feeling completely ripped off. Wines are grossly overpriced.

We had the four course chef’s selection Omakase and it did not work for us. The selection consisted of an Edamame snack, 3 savoury courses and a dessert. The second savoury course was a tuna course but the first course of sushi also had tuna as a significant element. The Edamame came two ways, one salty and one spicy but the spicy Edamame was also sweet and oily. Two of the savoury courses, the Okonomiyaki with tuna and the Angus Robata were also very, very sweet. As a result we skipped dessert and had some maki instead but did not really enjoy the rice in the maki. The staff in the restaurant seemed a bit stressed. The positives were that the restaurant itself and its location are beautiful and the Bangkok Chardonnay was beautiful.

Wonderful experience although only my main was served with my other dishes when I was told it would only come after. Other than that we had a wonderful experience
