Gourmet Guide Description

ëlgr, the brainchild of chef Jesper Nilsson, offers a captivating dining experience in Cape Town, providing a welcome escape from the bustle of Kloof Street. The chic, Scandi-inspired interiors with moody hues of charcoal and black are accented by pops of sage green and lush greenery that breathe life into this trendy, welcoming space.

Effortlessly cool, ëlgr undeniably draws a stylish and discerning crowd. A lively blend of local and international accents creates a dynamic and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The team is exceptional, beginning with the warm welcome from the maître d’, who introduces the dining concept and outlines Jesper’s intentions for his curated selection of dishes on the Chef’s Menu as the best way to proceed. The talented sommelier is on hand to expertly pair dishes with fine wines.

Chef Jesper, originally from Sweden and now a Cape Town local, blends his Nordic roots with a deep appreciation for South Africa’s top-quality fresh produce. The menu embodies the Swedish philosophy of ‘less is more’ while showcasing the very best of seasonal, delicious ingredients. Every item on the charcuterie board is passionately crafted from scratch – smoked, cured, or lovingly prepared by hand. Presented on wooden boards, this understated yet refined starter provides a glimpse of the dedication to meticulous, authentic cooking.

The Chefs Platter was quite underwhelming for the price and ‘hype’ The Lamb was cold and tough, got the sense that it was of the lunch leftovers. Wine is ridiculously overpriced , small quarter of a glass. Think the focus is tourists and making a buck as a half half fine dining. The big disappointment come from the promise that the chef platter is enough food for two grown men to be filled but we left R2500 later stepping into McDonald’s to fill up afterwards.

We were three woman out for an evening of good food, cocktails laughter and relaxation. We were seated at a table near the entrance which was not noisy and very comfortable. We were not disappointed with anything! The service was a bit slow but the staff were very pleasant and made us feel at home. I must point out now that the greeting when we arrived was extremely warm and even better when we left. The gentleman at the desk who noticed my difficulty in walked, opened the door wider and helped me through. He walked me across a very busy Kloof Strert, opened the door of the Uber and ensured that I was safely seated. He was courteous and amazing. A very valuable member of staff. Thank you so much for your well-run establishment and we'll definitely be there again. Regards Rose

Went with my wife while we were visiting the city and treated this as an early birthday present to her. Nice decor, subtle background music, friendly and attentive (but not overly which I appreciate) staff who helped with menu choices. We had three cold starters plates and two bigger ones of hot food which was plenty and all were well presented and delicious. Cocktails - very good ones with mescal that we tried. Wine - lots of choice and generally from smaller, low intervention producers so the price tags are a bit higher than I'd might have expected but the reds we had were very good.

This is my wife and I’s favorite spot. 4 years on, the food, service and overall experience is still as magical as our first visit.

We enjoyed every mouthful and wish there had been more of us to try more plates, as the servings were quite big. The sommelier was super helpful and we will definitely return - this time hungrier and will try the chefs menu. Thank you everyone!
