Wine, wine everywhere, tempting wine-lovers with the largest wine bar in the world. Welcome to Belthazar, a veritable theatre of fine food and wine on the cutting-edge of “shoppertainment”. A multi-purpose restaurant, grill, wine bar and gourmet home accessory shop, Belthazar brings a chic new concept in the culinary arts to Cape Town.

Dedicated to the wise man of the magi who was “lord of treasures”, a treasure trove of delights awaits foodies at Belthazar – along with an exclusive catalogue of kitchenware. (We might spell his name a little differently but we like to do things a little differently with a lot of style.)

Owners of award-winning Balducci, a landmark for contemporary dining at the Cape, travelled the world with their team to find an innovative formula which would showcase South African wine in a prime tourist location at the V&A Waterfront. Follow the romantic lamps to a terrace with dreamy views of Table Bay and the rich ambience of a wharf warehouse with thousands of bottles of wine, a glittering store of Riedel glassware, wine aprons, corkscrews, cookbooks and exclusive gourmet knives.

Brilliant night thanks to Brilliant! He was the perfect server, friendly and efficient with a great grasp of the menu and wine list. Our starters of marrow bones, springbok carpaccio and oysters (huge!) were excellent. Both steaks we ordered were perfectly cooked and side of Parmesan mashed potatoes and creamed spinach rounded everything out. Unfortunately we didn’t have room for dessert. We made a last minute reservation, which I would recommend so that there is a table available when you arrive; the restaurants in the area were all very busy.

We had dinner at Bethazar. The food was excellent and the service from Deborah was very good. Would happily eat there again and would recommend. It was busy so booking is definitely advisable.

The only real comment was the recommendation one glass of red wine : the nose was a lot better than the taste … but the price was terrible: 450 Rand for one glass . In other words: a tourist trap

When we asked for a CRACKER and SPECIAL FORK for the CRAYFISH we were told they do not have them. At those prices !! The manager and waiters did not know what we were talking about Disgusting. Altogether hugely overpriced a disappointment !

Belthazar responded on Wed 22 Jan 25:
Dear Gary We apologize that there was not a cracker available, nothing to do with the price but traditionally in South Africa very few people offer the cracker, we will now stick these crackers which are normally served with the main lobster which are much more robust. Thank you for alerting us.

Overall,we had a very good experience. One exception though- we found the chairs too bulky and heavy, which also impacted movement between tables. Please consider more user friendly chairs
