    They spoilt a birthday celebration with a burnt offerings and a lackluster apology. Was offered a free dessert and they eventually charged me for it. Once again there was a begrudging apology and a shrug of oh well nothing much we can do except offer you another dessert or something. Needless to say- not our go to celebration spot any longer

    We visited Bel Punto in Umdloti to celebrate my wife’s birthday with a group of seven. Some of us ordered the seafood spaghetti, and one dish had mussels that smelled clearly off. Most of us noticed the smell and didn’t eat them, but unfortunately, one person in our group did — and ended up with food poisoning. They developed severe symptoms including dizziness, rashes, and skin irritation, and had to be taken to the hospital immediately. The doctor confirmed it was caused by something in the food. What was even more upsetting than the incident itself was how the restaurant handled it. We spoke to the manager, expecting at least some concern or an apology. Instead, we were told that they “checked with the kitchen” and that there was “nothing wrong with the seafood.” That was it — no apology, no accountability, no genuine concern. This kind of response is unacceptable. When a customer is hospitalized due to something they ate at your restaurant, the bare minimum is to show empathy and take it seriously. The dismissive attitude we received was beyond disappointing. After this experience, I will never return to Bel Punto, and I strongly urge others to think twice before dining here — especially if food safety matters to you.

    Dear Jason, We are truly sorry to hear about your experience at Bel Punto and, most importantly, that someone in your group became unwell. The health and safety of our guests are our top priorities, and we take any concerns about food quality extremely seriously. We regret that you felt our response on the night was not empathetic or sufficient. We always strive to handle situations with care and professionalism, and we sincerely apologise if we fell short in this instance. We have discussed this with our manager that was on duty. Please know that we did immediately check the mussels in the kitchen, and we found the mussels to be fresh and fine. Our supplier does do tests on the water quality and various tests before dispatching for delivery. We have conducted a full review with our kitchen team and supplier, and can assure you all good on our side. We served 10kgs of Fresh Mussels over Saturday and Sunday with no other report from guests of being unwell. Was it definitely the mussel or could it have been a prawn allergy or possibly a stomach bug/virus (as we checked with pharmacy who are very aware of bad gastric virus at present ? We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you directly so we can better understand what happened and work towards a resolution.
