Our recent lunch outing at And Then There Was Fire was a memorable one, filled with both delightful dishes and a few surprising quirks. This woodfired grill and tapas café impressed us with its creative menu and charming ambiance, making it a wonderful spot for a relaxed celebration with friends. Food The food was undoubtedly the highlight. We started by sharing a mix of delicious starters: the Next Door Farm Oxtail Stew, Duck Spring Rolls, Korean Fried Chicken, and Fritura de Pescados & Mariscos. Each dish was packed with flavor, and the portion sizes were perfect for sharing, just as our helpful waiter recommended. For mains, I had the pork belly paired with crispy French fries and roasted baby carrots—it was mouthwatering! One friend ordered the chicken from the "cut of the day" menu, but unfortunately, it turned out chewy and underwhelming, which was the one downside in terms of taste. We paired our meal with a bottle of Jan Harmsgat Sauvignon Blanc, which beautifully complemented our mains and added that extra touch to our meal. However, a mix-up with the drinks left us puzzled when our alcoholic cocktails were served as virgin; a small but noticeable misstep in the otherwise attentive service. Ambiance The daytime atmosphere at And Then There Was Fire is nice and cozy, with rustic touches that add warmth to the space. It’s an inviting spot for casual gatherings, and the relaxed vibe suited our celebration perfectly. Service Overall, the service was good, with our waiter being helpful and knowledgeable about the menu, but a couple of unexpected surprises did catch us off guard. Firstly, when we brought our own cake for a birthday celebration, we were told there’d be a R150 charge to enjoy it on-site. It would have been nice to know this policy beforehand. Additionally, the restaurant requires a fixed tipping amount, which felt unusual and left us a bit shocked. Overall Experience Despite a few quirks, And Then There Was Fire offered an amazing experience with an inspired menu and welcoming atmosphere. The food alone is worth a visit, and it’s a great choice for a relaxed meal with friends. Just a heads-up: check on their policies around cake and tipping before going.

They do not subtract the money you paid on Dineplan on the bill and you have to ask. Overall, making it complicated to work with & the fact that you have to ask about it. It’s a great place, my third time going, overall it’s great.

The chicken meal was too simple. Nothing to enjoy and the service was not good, the waiter was actually not being as attentive as others, seems like he looks down on people Jeremiah or jemmy whatever his name is. I would never go back to that restaurant otherwise the lady who was welcoming people was a great person throughout!

We went to And then there was fire to celebrate my wife's birthday. The venue is lovely, and we have been there before, so were excited to return. My father and I ordered the rump steak. When it came, even before we cut into it both my father and I looked at each other and noticed the grain in the steak looked funny, and said to each other - this looks as tough as old boots. It was! I had ordered my rump medium rare, but it looked more medium well. I sent the steak back and said it was very tough. A person who I presume was the manager came out to me and argued with me telling me that he had tasted the steak and it was perfect and tender, and said that if I preferred more tender meat, I should have ordered the fillet. I said that I have eaten thousands of steaks and that this was definitely not tender. He grumbled and returned to the kitchen telling me they would bring us fillet steak. The fillet arrived, and it was also not nice and not tender like a fillet should be. The steak also tasted strange, but I ate it anyway. For the next 2 days both my father and I had upset stomachs - so something was definitely off! Turns out - the customer is king, even if not always right. We were treated poorly through this situation and the manager handled it very badly. Everyone else's food was great - and the other dishes I tasted were at the same high standard that I had experienced before. It was a real pity that the manager took such offence to me telling him his steak was not nice. After paying R2,650 for a meal for 6 people, I feel like we should have had better service and better quality food. Being sick as a result of bad food is a terrible sign. As I said, won't be returning.

Everything was fine, trying the restaurant for the first time was a good experience. There could be a better solution for having AC in the indoor section.

Fantastic restaurant, please remove the section to provide if it’s a special occasion when you book because it changes nothing and creates an expectation from the customer which soured the experience a bit.
