A brief history of the margarita cocktail

As one of the most popular cocktails in the world, the history of the margarita and who invented this refreshing lime-and-tequila drink is a bit blurry. Many have claimed the title of “Margarita Master”, but whoever it was, all we can say is gracias!

One popular story goes that the restaurant owner of Rancho La Gloria, in Baja California, Carlos “Danny” Herrera, created the cocktail in 1938 for a Marjorie King – a customer who claimed to be allergic to all alcohol, except tequila.

“She was a beautiful woman, around 28 or 30 years old. She was staying in San Diego, and she went to Ensenada every day during negotiations to purchase the hotel. She stopped both ways and had a drink. She was allergic to everything except tequila. But she couldn’t take it straight.” – Herrera

Another story claims the cocktail was created in 1941 by Don Carlos Orozco at Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada in Baja California for a regular guest named Margarita Henkel Cesena. Lastly, Margarita Sames, a socialite from Dallas, Texas is said to have created the cocktail to serve to guests at a party she was throwing at her vacation home in Acapulco, Mexico.

Whichever story tells the true origin of the cocktail, the margarita quickly became a popular drink in both Mexico and the USA. Then, with the introduction of the frozen margarita In the 1950s, popularity soared and now it is enjoyed world-wide.
