BRUNCH: Cape Town’s Inner City Hidden Gem

There’s one thing that will never be a bad idea and that’s brunch; you can technically eat it at any time of day and even indulge in it with a glass of bubbles.

From flapjacks to luxurious eggs Benedict, brunch is comfort food at its best. Cape Town’s latest restaurant to hit the brunch scene is Loop Street hangout, BRUNCH. The new spot has been dubbed one of the most Instagrammable brunch spots in the city and for good reason. Nestled on the bottom floor of the cool co-working space, Ideas Cartel, BRUNCH is offering Capetonians a little slice of heaven with their glorious daytime offering. Here’s what to expect when you make your booking at the City Bowl’s new hidden gem.

The food

Being a brunch spot, the menu here features an extensive offering of breakfast treats. Think flapjack stacks with dreamy toppings like poached pear, cardamom cream and toasted almonds, or banana loaf French toast with mascarpone, bacon and a maple ginger glaze. If you’re after something savory, the classic croque Madame is hearty and oozing with cheesy goodness. The shakshuka is fiery and full of flavour with perfectly cooked eggs nestled happily in soft peppers and tomato bubbling away in a skillet. If you’re after a simpler brekkie, then the eggs Benedict with bacon, salmon or spinach will do nicely as will the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel.

What’s not on the menu is their delicious array of daily baked treats. You’ll walk in and find anything from a fluffy pear and marshmallow sponge cake to freshly baked madeleines or the most sensational pear and caramel tart. On the run? Grab one of their beautiful croissants or muffins to go.

BRUNCH also offers great lunchtime treats for hungry office workers. They offer anything from wholesome salads to toasties. There’s also daily harvest table offerings like bobotie with basmati rice or truffle mac and cheese.

The bar

Whether you’re here for breakfast, brunch or lunch, the beverage offering has something for all occasions. The coffee is perfectly made and the vanilla iced coffee deserves a special mention. If caffeine isn’t your thing, there are a range of juice boxes and Culture Lab kombuchas to quench your thirst. If you’re making it a boozy affair, sip on some Steenberg bubbly, a mimosa or an Inverroche G&T.

The vibe

You’ll find BRUNCH nestled behind a pretty pot plant-lined sidewalk and inside is a calming oasis from the concrete jungle outside. The space is beautifully decorated with vintage touches and plenty of fresh and dried greenery to add some pops of colour. It’s charming and cosy and makes for a perfect date spot or place to catch up with friends. Nab a table in the corner for an intimate meal for two or get comfortable on one of the plush couches that will make you feel like you’re right at home – but with some delicious treats coming your way.

BRUNCH is open Monday to Friday from 7pm to 4pm and weekends from 9am to 2pm at 113 Loop Street, Cape Town.
