The chefs and restaurateurs behind DUSK in Stellenbosch, Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin, are going back to their roots. They’ve blended rustic charm with seaside elegance to create Yzerfontein’s newest culinary gem – The Beach House – bringing the spirit of the West Coast to life.
West Coast tribute
Located right on the edge of the iconic 16-Mile Beach (the longest stretch of uninterrupted sand in the southern hemisphere), The Beach House offers more than just a meal, it’s a tribute to the West Coast’s unique culture and environment. Every element, from its interior design to its menu, has been crafted to celebrate the region’s rich heritage.
As you walk up to the restaurant, you’re greeted by a mussel-clad gabion wall and a klompie brick pathway leading to the building. A reimagined 80-year-old beach house, redesigned by local designer Hayley Breytenbach. Her vision blends the natural beauty of the coastline with a touch of Ralph Lauren’s timeless summer-by-the-sea style.
Think deep navy tones, handcrafted nautical features, and carefully curated maritime décor – all anchored by the restored original Oregon pine floors.
The menu: Fresh, local, and delicious
From freshly harvested mussels to foraged beach herbs and the daily catch from local fishermen, Head Chef Jacques Grove – who’s worked with Chefs Warehouse and in Michelin-starred kitchens in London – has crafted a menu that showcases the best of locally and sustainably-sourced ingredients.
Highlights on the menu include the Baai Slaai, a foraged salad with dune spinach, soutslaai, and wood sorrel flowers, and a whole line-caught fish prepared over a wood-fired kaggel (a nod to traditional cooking methods). Meat lovers will want to try the 1.2kg prime rib on the bone, served Florentine style with rich Café de Paris butter. And of course, West Coast classics like fish and chips and peri-peri chicken are also on the menu, promising to be the best you’ve had.
As for the drinks, the menu features a curated selection of West Coast and Cape Winelands wines, along with expertly crafted cocktails – perfect for sipping by the sea.
A warm, welcoming atmosphere
The Beach House promises a warm, welcoming atmosphere, blending relaxed coastal vibes with refined dining. Leading the Front of House team is Hadge Maulana, a seasoned Restaurant Manager and Sommelier who has been with the group for over a decade. Expect top-notch service in a laid-back setting, with a dog-friendly patio so even your four-legged family members can enjoy the West Coast sun.
A local dining destination
Whether you’re a Yzerfontein local or planning a road trip from Cape Town, The Beach House is set to become an iconic destination that you won’t want to miss. Darren and Callan’s latest venture brings the spirit of the West Coast to life, offering an unforgettable dining experience.
The Beach House will officially open its doors on Thursday, 24 October, serving lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday. Reserve your table on Dineplan.
