SMEUL is a fire-focused restaurant at Zomerlust Boutique Hotel in Paarl.
Award-winning chef and Paarl local Kevin Grobler and his team serve an à la carte menu shaped by fire, smoke and flame.

The food is rooted in authenticity and purpose – honouring seasonality and letting superb ingredients shine. SMEUL works closely with local farmers and producers, championing sustainable practices and celebrating what the region has to offer.

The wine list, developed by our sommelier, draws on local and hard-to-find favourites chosen for their substance, a story and unique food pairing abilities.
About Kevin Grobler

Many will know him as Head Chef at the Michelin-starred JAN in Nice, Executive Chef at Delaire Graff, and most recently as Executive Chef at SCAPE in Suid-Agter Paarl, where he received an Eat Out One Star Award in 2025.

SMEUL marks a return to the heart of his home town – and a chance to marry his creativity with the skill required to cook elevated cuisine over the most humble and ancient tools: a flame.

    beyond expectations to be perfectly honest! Every one is seemingly going the fire & open flame route, so we expected great BUT this was outstanding. Theyve managed to incorprate the restaurant into teh hotel in such a quirky manner that it doesnt feel like a "hotel restaurant" and yet, its a perfect extension of this quaint & absolutely gorgeous & luxurious hotel. It was perfect weather, so we opted to sit outside. Just stunning! Service - amazing - they have found that balance between impeccable and non-intrusive. Our glasses were never empty, and our food arrived promptly - with extra flair. And the food - perfection! melt-in-your-mouth, delicious, full of flavour. Highly recommend this dining experience !!

    We sat outside, because it was quite hot. Every meal was an experience and it was generous portions. Our waiter was excellent!! Very friendly and explained each dish. All and all, 10/10

    Thank you for a lovely afternoon on Saturday, 5 September. The food was a cut above the rest...compliments to your Chef! Your staff are well-mannered and they have excellent knowledge about the products. We even had a tour of the library and rooms, and hope to visit again. Perhaps this time for a drive in the Rolls Royce.
