About Kevin Grobler

Many will know him as Head Chef at the Michelin-starred JAN in Nice, Executive Chef at Delaire Graff, and most recently as Executive Chef at SCAPE in Suid-Agter Paarl, where he received an Eat Out One Star Award in 2025.

SMEUL marks a return to the heart of his home town – and a chance to marry his creativity with the skill required to cook elevated cuisine over the most humble and ancient tools: a flame.

Smeul means smoulder — the name gets explained the moment you sit down. Everything on this menu, led by Chef Kevin Grobler, is shaped by fire, smoke, and flame — and so is the room. Cosy next to the wood-burning fire, with the most comfortable restaurant chairs I've sat in for a meal, hours felt like minutes. It was a weeknight, so everyone had somewhere to be in the morning — and still, table after table lingered. We ordered the sirloin carpaccio, cauliflower risotto, cured line fish, char siu pork belly, braised lamb leg, triple-cooked baby potatoes, and fresh cabbage slaw. The carpaccio was silky, almost buttery, with a clean beefy depth you don't always get from this dish. Truffle dressing and aged parmesan sat over the top, present but never fighting the beef, while the onion chips brought a sharp, crunchy contrast against something soft. Cauliflower risotto was the most surprising dish — all the comfort of risotto, none of the starch, the cauliflower doing the work rice usually does. Basil oil and a light foam pooled around it, fresh leaves cutting through what could've been heavy. The cured fish is like nothing I've tasted before — cold, kimchi kept in check, naartjie aguachile cutting through with citrus brightness against the cure. The naartjie was plated like a thin slice of canned peach. No idea how he pulled that off. Lamb leg and cabbage slaw both disappeared fast. And then the potatoes — Kevin's been serving some version of these for years, now finished with chopped gherkins that are clearly his own touch. I'd order all three again without a second thought. Then the char siu pork belly, the standout: char, fat, and give coming through in turn before settling together, with a glaze that's sweet and salty and cut with a sour, fruity edge from fermented gooseberries. I was ready to lick the plate. Staff were warm without hovering, clearly proud of it. Fitting, too, that the chef himself lives up to the name — smoking hot.

Heerlike aand saam as gesin. Dit was 'n ongelooflike ervaring. Shaquille se kennis van die kos en wyn was uitstaande en het die aand nóg meer besonders gemaak. Baie dankie vir die uitstekende gasvryheid en onvergeetlike ervaring!

This was our first visit to Smeul and we were blown away! The flavours and presentation of the dishes are exceptional, the service was 5 star and the guest house itself is just beautiful! What a gem, we can't wait to go back. I can highly recommend the cauliflower risotto, beef carpaccio and pork belly.
